Career path concerns : Economics M.A. in the U.S.

오늘 미국 경제학 석사 프로그램을 몇 개 찾아보았다.
특히 남편이 근무 중인 University of Wisconsin Madison을 집중적으로 찾아보았는데, 결과가 실망스러웠다.
UW에서 석사 프로그램이 제공되지만 석사생은 보조금과 조교 장학금 대상이 아니라고 한다.
홈페이지에는 ‘등록금 감면 혜택이 있는 일자리를 수락할 시 해당 석사 프로그램에서 제외될 수 있다.’ 는 안내가 명시되어 있었다.
미국 대학교가 경제학 석사 과정을 캐시 카우로 여긴다는 말은 익히 들었지만, 장학금의 가능성을 원천 차단하는 문구를 보니 당황스러웠다.
박사 과정은 전액 보조를 지원하는 것 같지만, 학계는 생각이 없기에 4년 이상의 긴 시간을 원치않는 박사 공부에 할애하고 싶지는 않다.
이럴 줄 알았으면 결혼하기 전에 좀더 저축해둘걸.
머리가 복잡한 날이다.
 
Today, I spent an entire day researching economics master's programs in the U.S., particularly focusing on the ones at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where my husband works. However, the result was disappointing.
According to its website, while UW offers master's programs in economics, students enrolled in these programs are not eligible for tuition remission from graduate assistantships. The official website even denotes that "Accepting any positions which grant tuition waiver while enrolled in the program may lead to the removal of the student from the M.S. in Economics student cohort." Despite already knowing the reputation of economics master's programs as 'cash cows', blocking access to scholarship remained frustrating.
Even though UW provides a full-funded Ph.D course, spending more than 4 years to acquire Ph.D degree doesn't align with my career goals since I'm not pursuing an academic path.
I should have saved more money before getting married to be better prepared for my future.
I feel like my head is about to explode.
