Power English 07/26/24:
Microgreens as a Side Hustle

🍪 Dialog

Theresa: So, Flank ordered 3 kilos a week. How much were you growing at that point?
Blake: I was only growing about 3 kilos a week. That meant I had to scale up right away.
Theresa: At least you found out that there was a market for your product.
Blake: Then he told a few of his restaurant friends and I got more orders. Last month, I added two more greens to my product list.
Theresa: It's probably getting hard to keep track of it all.
Blake Don't forget, I'm an accountant in my day job.

🍪 Power Expressions

✅ Scale up: to increase something in size or scope; to make something larger or more.

- When you are talking about a small business and increasing the volume, or the amount they sell, that is what you would call "scaling up the business".
Scaling up means doing more of the same thing you've done so far. If you start something different to increase the total amount, that would be "expanding".
This expression is very business-, and project-oriented, so it seems awkward when it is used in daily life.

✅ Find out something: to learn something, often a single fact about something. (= discover)

e.g. I found out that you and Mike are dating.
e.g. I found out that Ted and I have the same birthday. 테드와 나의 생일이 같다는 걸 알게 됐다.

✅ Keep track of something or someone: to monitor something, being able to follow everything is going; to look and see what they are doing or how they are performing;

- Where are my keys? I set them down next to my phone. / You can't seem to keep track of anything. 넌 뭘 어디에 뒀는지 아무것도 기억 못하는 것 같아!

 Don't forget, ....

Accountant: Accountants keep track of the financial flows of businesses and individuals to examine financial records, identify potential areas of opportunity and risk, and provide solutions.

🍪 Personal Picks

✅ There was a market. 수요가 있었네.

- It implies a demand for something and the availability of sellers to meet that demand.
- A market doesn't mean a place for transactions (시장) in this context.

✅ Pesimistic 비관적인; Optimistic 낙관적인

Word of mouth 입소문

- The passing of information from person to person using oral communication.
- In this dialog, one happy customer told another person, and they became a new customer. Flank didn't advertise, but just got it through word of mouth.
